About

SKYSPACE Green Roofs provides programming and design strategies for storm water management, insulation, roof membrane protection and urban farming through the creation of vibrant roof gardens with numerous environmental benefits.

Our team of landscape architects, engineers and technicians bring a unique perspective to mapping and installing all types of eco roof systems, from lightweight sedum and native plant designs to deep soil systems, each providing a habitat for wildlife while beautifying the urban landscape.

We love what we do and take pride in our work.

DESIGN
Green roof design is imperative to your green roof project’s success and will help facilitate a smooth transition into the construction stage. We produce all necessary construction and detailed CAD drawings required for the installation of your project.

Our multi-disciplinary approach to green roof design means a qualified team of designers, engineers, horticulturists and technicians all working in unison with developers and home owners.
Every project begins with a site visit and inspection. We assess existing conditions and provide a site analysis to assist our clients in establishing their green roof project goals. After the preliminary planning stage has been completed, we develop a detailed concept drawing and layout for your green roof system. The type of planting material desired for your project will determine the depth of the growing medium or green roof soil needed to sustain the plants and maximize green roof benefits.

Factors to Consider:
Load carrying capacity of your roof structure, likely involving a civil engineer;
The type of planting material you want will largely depend on the soil depth. Grasses, asters and other perennials will require at least 6” of growing medium. The typical green roof plant of choice is the sedum specie. Also known as a succulent, it can survive in very adverse environmental conditions. Once established, they do not need to be irrigated. The establishment period could take approximately 1-2 years;
Roof accessibility, both immediately and over time;
The general condition of your roof. If it is older than 10 years, or has cracks or leaks in the membrane, you should consider re-roofing before considering your green roof goals.

Green Roof Typology
No two roof gardens are alike; that said, there are three primary types:

Extensive: a shallow and lighter system, this is the most common type of live roof. Soil depths range from depth from 2 cm or 0.79 inches to 12.7 cm or 5.0 inches;
Semi-intensive: a deeper green roof system where soil depths range from, 6” to 10”. This system has greater planting options due to greater soil availability;
Intensive: typically characterized by soil depths beginning at 10”, this type of eco roof system can support most types of plants, including shrubs and trees, but is heavier and needs more maintenance

INSTALLATION
Our team is professionally trained, licensed and insured (liability and WSIB) to safely install green roofs using current construction practices for high quality installations. Once our design team completes the layout, our installers begin site preparation. Installations can take anywhere from 3-7 days depending on size of the project area and the complexity of the green roof design.

At SKYSPACE Green Roofs, safety always comes first for our clients and staff. All green roof projects are signed off for structural and wind uplift clearance by a licensed engineer before installation.

MAINTENANCE
All green roofs require some maintenance depending on the type, design and plant material; like any living thing, they require some “TLC” to optimize green roof benefits.

Annual inspections and monitoring are necessary to ensuring the overall health and vibrancy of your plants, and weeds should be removed periodically.

Although most green roof systems do not require irrigation, we highly recommend a temporary watering system to support your plants in taking root; this can be done manually or with a drip line.
Site maintenance includes the following:
Full system inspection check of the irrigation system, waterproofing membrane, drains, vents, flashing and edging;
Removal of under-performing plant material;
Vegetation and substrate testing and replacement if necessary.

Our knowledgeable staff will routinely visit your green roof after the installation is complete and monitor its performance through our tailored maintenance programs. After each assessment you will receive a full report.

BENEFITS OF GREEN ROOFS
Green roofs bring innumerable benefits to the buildings they grace in making full use of what would otherwise be wasted space and the intelligence of plant life combined to filter water and treat air. No two roof gardens are the same! Some of the functions they serve include:

Absorption of rainwater or reduction in storm water runoff by diverting water from water ways;
Insulation or energy-saving: reduction in heating & cooling costs;
A habitat for wildlife who might otherwise be without in an urban environment;
Contributing to the mitigation of heat island effect;
Increase in property value and the lifespan of your roof through sun damage protection;
Urban farming: grow your own food or plants to be more self sufficient;
Some studies have shown that a green roof can offer protection for up to 70 years.

TORONTO INCENTIVE PROGRAM
The City of Toronto’s Eco-Roof Incentive Program now includes residential green roofs in addition to industrial, commercial and institutional properties. Please note that this program is available only to voluntary installations – if you are required to install a green roof by law, you are not eligible for this incentive.

Successful applicants will receive up to $75/ sq. m. grant to subsidize a green roof installation (up to $100,000 max.). For more information please visit www.toronto.ca/livegreen/ecoroofs
